HOW TO ORDER BESPOKE WOODEN FURNITURE ONLINE IN SOUTH AFRICA
A complete guide from Crafted Living
Ordering bespoke wooden furniture online can feel intimidating — especially when you’re investing in a solid wood piece made to last for generations. At Crafted Living, we’ve designed a simple and transparent process that makes the entire journey easy, personal, and enjoyable. Here’s exactly what to expect when you order custom furniture with us, from first contact to installation.
1. Getting in Touch
Most clients reach us through email, WhatsApp, a phone call, social media, or directly through our website.
We’ll always guide the conversation to email so everything is in writing — clear, organized, and easy to refer back to throughout the project.
This is the first step of your bespoke journey, and it already sets the tone for a smooth collaboration.
2. Understanding What You Want
Once we receive your message, we begin by clarifying your vision:
-
Are you customising a product from our catalogue?
-
Or do you have your own concept or inspiration image (Pinterest, Instagram, etc.)?
We gather details like materials, colours, dimensions, theme/style, and the room the piece will live in. The more we understand your space and aesthetic, the better we can guide you.
You can expect us to ask thoughtful questions — not to complicate the process, but to ensure your piece is perfect for your home.
3. Measurements Made Simple
If you’re in Cape Town, we can come measure — but most clients prefer to measure themselves.
We guide you through what to measure and how to avoid common mistakes.
The biggest one? Rounding up.
If your space is 150.6cm wide, rounding up to 151cm could mean the piece doesn’t fit.
Rounding down avoids that problem, leaving room for a neat shadow line.
This step helps ensure your custom piece arrives fitting perfectly, with zero stress.
4. Exploring Material & Colour Options
Choosing finishes is one of our favourite parts — and often one of the most personal.
We can provide samples, or if you’re trying to match existing furniture, we’ll ask you for a physical sample or reference. Our finishing specialists can custom-match colours when needed.
We also help clients avoid clashing themes.
For example, a rustic beach house won’t pair well with a sleek ultra-modern gloss piece.
Your furniture can stand out beautifully without breaking the design language of your home.
This is where the Crafted Living expertise comes in — ensuring the piece enhances your space instead of fighting it.
5. Finalising Details & Creating a Quote
We only quote once we have all the information.
This avoids the back-and-forth that happens when quotes have to change later.
Depending on the product:
-
Standard products: 70% deposit
-
Custom pieces: Full payment upfront (due to the specialised nature of the work)
Once payment is in, your piece moves into production.
6. Production & Communication
We keep communication clear and consistent throughout the process.
Although we don’t send daily progress photos (it disrupts the workflow), we do communicate:
-
When the build begins
-
If anything needs clarification
-
If there’s a delay
-
When your piece is complete
For very large custom projects, we may share occasional progress updates on request.
You’ll always know what’s happening — no disappearing acts, no guessing.
7. Delivery & Installation
Most of our pieces are freestanding and don’t require installation.
However, for items like tables, multi-part shelves, or large corporate orders:
-
We offer installation at an additional fee
-
We personally assemble on-site if needed
-
We ensure everything is secure, level, and perfect
For deliveries, we use professional couriers who specialise in furniture, and we package every piece with extreme care.
8. Why Bespoke Furniture Is Worth It
Many people assume custom furniture is only for the wealthy — but the reality is the opposite.
Mass-produced furniture is built from cheap materials like MDF or chipboard and often needs replacing every 1–2 years.
Solid wood is different.
It ages beautifully.
It gets stronger over time.
And with proper care, it can be passed down to your children.
In the long run, buying bespoke solid wood is the more economical choice — and the more meaningful one.
9. What Makes the Client–Maker Relationship Work
Two things: communication and collaboration.
Clients want to know their investment is in safe hands, and we take that seriously.
We stay in touch, we ask the right questions, and we design with you — not just for you.
This collaboration is what makes the final piece feel special.
It becomes your creation just as much as ours.
